I was puzzled and kind of embarrassed a cab driver when he made a joke. He just shrugged it as a 'bad joke' though. That was the night I arrived at St. Johns.

Now, I guess I can manage talking with and understanding the drivers, receptionists and salesmen. Then again, they are always talking with tourists like me.

Just met a 'real' Newfoundlander. They talk different. Its not just the accent. They change the grammar of English. I am going to post about that soon. It was entertaining.

I've typed "Newfoundland" into Google's new blog search engine and am touring blogs that talk about Newfoundland.

Just a few comments to anyone else doing the same thing. I hope no one takes offense.

Firstly, we all don't talk with "Newfie" accents here. Most of us live in North American style houses, having running water, electrical power, cable TV, and broadband internet. We even have Wal-Marts and The Gap, and at least one Starbucks. And we drive cars.

I don't know why people are so interested in Newfoundland accents, what's left of them anyway, most of the Celtic accents here have been destroyed by American TV and music.

Oh, FYI, "Newfie" is generally considered a word akin to the "N" word for African Americans. Something to be avoided.
