Scientific Probity

Creativity should be used in designing experiments, not in formulating the results.

One of my friends was tempted to tweak the results of a scientific experiment just so that the final graphs of that paper look better. Later this person had a feeling of malaise and reverted to the earlier not-so-good, but observed, results. I am really glad that this person reported observed results and preserved the integrity of the scientific mind.

New Mexico Science Olympiad

I graded one of the events at the New Mexico Science Olympiad called ‘Compute This’, which took place yesterday. This event evaluates the searching capability of middle school and high school students using search engines like google, yahoo, etc. The participants should present their results using Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel software.

Cricket - Online Game

One of my friends sent the following link: Stick Cricket. I played 2 matches. It is fun to play and addictive. I will probably play more once I pass my examination this weekend.

GSA Conference

The first GSA conference held at NMT was a success. It consisted of a number of useful workshops, interesting presentations, and informative posters.

Getting Organized

Two more days left for the first GSA conference. Today, the conference committee had a meeting and we went over the final checklist. We members got blue colored polo shirts to wear during the conference. But, I think it is a little big on me. The next few days are going to be hectic in studies, research, and work.

Lately, things have not been in proper order. I have been procrastinating too much to organize my apartment and my office. The trouble started when I found it difficult to locate things that I need. Maybe, that’s why I am not able to focus more on my work. But, the quote below says otherwise.

If a cluttered desk is the sign of a cluttered mind, what is the significance of a clean desk?

News

I watched both NBC nightly news (Red Sea Tragedy) and the local news today (George Bush’s visit to Albuquerque).

There was bad news for myspace and facebook users. They are a target for online predators.

President Bush is a humble person. He even quipped that he needs a mentor for Math and English. He was in his best humor at the press conference. The gloomy end to his visit was the accident that a sergeant suffered who was a part of his motorcade. The main purpose of his visit was to promote science in schools. He was also talking about increasing the visits of scientists to schools. I think he is doing a good job for education.

Loteria

Yestreen, I played Loteria (Mexican version of Bingo) at Liliana’s place. It was a fun game; especially, because I did not know Spanish. It was like learning Spanish by looking at the pictures. I kind of got a hold of the most common nouns in Spanish.

I had been busy this week. My advisor is back in town. I have a new officemate now. Tetsu, my earlier officemate, graduated last semester. I had been working alone in my office room since then. Hide, my new officemate, is cool and he is from Japan too. (Tetsu is Japanese.) He seems to be studious and hard working. Anyway, I finally feel rejuvenated and happy to converse with another soul in my office. All this while, I had been alone and when I get bored I used to go out and watch the construction work outside the building; it was not very interesting. Now, I can talk to Hide whenever I get bored from staring at the computer monitor.
