Warm morning

After a week of chilly wind and cloudy skies, today I had the opportunity to bask while waking up from my bed.

This quote is apt:
If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.
-- Anne Bradstreet, 'Meditations Divine and Moral,' 1655

Between Worlds: The Making of an American Life

I had a peek into Between Worlds: The Making of an American Life by Bill Richardson at the airport book store. Bill Richardson is the Governor of New Mexico state. It was well written and interesting. I intend to check that book at the library.

Boomtown

I watched an episode from Boomtown at Ramesh’s. It seems to be interesting to see a crime scene from all possible perspectives (including the victim).

Mathematical Migration

I saw these fractal artworks posted behind my office building.

"This sequence of images from the Mandelbrot Set takes you on a journey ever deeper into a mathematically created landscape. Fractals can be zoomed into and explored infinitely, and in this sequence, each image is approximately 10 times deeper than the previous one in which it is contained. See if you can discern the relationships between the images. After zooming through the 10 images, the picture you are looking at is smaller than the diameter of an atom. Or, looked at in the other direction, the original image is roughly the size of our solar system! Amazingly, this mathematical migration could continue forever. Learn more about fractals – the confluence of art, science, math and technology – at www.FractalFoundation.org."

Foreign words

I watched Jaywalking on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The topic was foreign words. Jay asked some of the people about the common foreign words used by Americans. The words were:
1. SOUP DU JOUR
2. MANO O MANO
3. COUP DETAT
4. MAZEL TOV
5. OY VEY
6. MAGNA CUM LAUDE
7. SHITAKE
8. PAISAN
9. MENAGE A TROIS

I could answer only one of them (MAGNA CUM LAUDE)
Would anyone like trying the above phrases without any reference?

Publish and Flourish

I attended the Publish & Flourish workshop conducted by Dr. Tara Gray. It was a very useful exercise that is now motivating me to write quickly. The participants were taught different strategies to employ in publishing in the shortest possible time.

I was also impressed to know that Dr. Tara Gray’s favorite TV show was Law & Order, just like mine.

Notebook memory upgrade

I and Tetsu installed a new memory module on his Toshiba Satellite notebook. I will illustrate the process here.

We used screw driver to remove the cover over the memory module. Then slide the memory card at an angle into the slot. You will here a click when the card seats itself properly. That’s it!

Isn't it simple?

Windows Live Beta

I just stumbled on this website: www.live.com. Currently, I use the widgets in Konfabulator to manage my to-do lists, weather, etc. Windows Live Beta offers similar gadgets and is available on the Internet. This helps me in looking up my to-do list from anywhere on the Internet, unlike the one in konfabulator where I have to manage it in a local machine. One downside with Windows Live is that there it does not completely support firefox browser.

Fallen Leaves

This is the picture of a tree between Speare building and Workman building.

Fallen leaves lying on the grass in the November sun bring more happiness than the daffodils. — Cyril Connolly
